Transitions require sacrifice

"Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable... Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals."

- Martin Luther King, Jr.

It's been a good little while since I shared a blog. Mine was a case of needing to adapt to a fresh set of expectations that came with a pivotal transition. I have to admit, in the effort to stay on top of my grind with everything I had going on in my professional and personal life, I had moments I fought hard to maintain a positive outlook, largely because I was running - but running on fumes. I had days when I didn't know what day of the week it was because I had been travelling so much or working hard at meeting deadlines for multiple, completely non-related projects. But you see, all these projects and assignments meant a lot to me. There were no pickings - all of it had to get done in one way or the other! And so I took my tasks on as a series of big challenges that required little incremental steps to get to the finish line.

New beginnings should always be accompanied by keeping up the momentum in positive thinking, actions driven by a quest to keep your goals aligned with the essence of who you are, moments of reflection, gratitude and something I find really very important - PRAYER! I have to say, I underestimated what would be required of me during my period of transitioning from the old to the new. Often we pray for new things, new frontiers, new doors to be open; but how many of us know that in that newness, much is also expected of us?

Sacrifice is a prerequisite that we often don't consider until we are beyond knee or neck deep in the outcome we've been working so hard at or praying so long for. To make an impact at a new job requires you to work long hours and adapt to new personalities. Adjusting to a move means you may need to establish new relationships and make longer commutes . Kicking bad habits means you have to grow comfortable in being uncomfortable for a little while until that habit no longer holds you captive...and so on.

Whatever your new season is, know that it will demand a few things from you. You may have to cut out the TV or social time with the girlfriends or get off Whatsapp groups just to keep from getting distracted. You may have make significant budgetary adjustments so you can cross the bridge to being debt free. Transitions are sacrificial. Something must give, and you need to understand that the giving of effort, time, instruction or resources, may need to come from you!
