Why my recent trip to Botswana re-emphasised the power of “I CAN!”

I’ve just returned from a trip to Botswana, one that was powered by faith, the desire to step outside my comfort zone and advancing my quest to live a purpose-driven life. If you had told me I would end my year having gone on two missions to the mother continent, trips of which were solely tied to my real passion – inspiring women to discover their authenticity through walking in faith – I would have insisted that you were talking to a different Yvonne. It’s amazing how unexpected adversity sets you on the path to reassessing the true meaning of life, and the vitality of seeking to live beyond just breathing.

“If you feel like there’s something out there that you’re supposed to be doing, if you have a passion for it, then stop wishing and just do it.” —Wanda Sykes

I spent my 6 day trip between Gaborone and Kanye, on this round visiting a group of women – now sisters - who had supported one of our events this summer. They were hosting a women’s conference and had asked me to speak. Mine was an enthusiastic “YAAASSS!” to the invitation, one that immediately challenged me to invoke the spirit of faith just for everything to fall in place spiritually, financially and otherwise. When you are engrossed in the everyday grind, making time to feed the things you are passionate about can be an impossible feat. I knew I had to be in Botswana this December, but just wasn’t 100% sure why it was that GOD wanted me to be there.

"The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands."

Psalm 138:8

The trip was powerfully anointed – truly timely, as I enjoyed sharing the stage with some pretty outstanding Motswana women. My dear friend, powerhouse, sister-in-Christ, coach and all around achiever Cynthia Hakutangwi joined me on this trip, also as invited guest at the same conference. We spoke discovery, purpose, outreach, communications strategy as it relates to our professions, raising children, transformation change across the continent of Africa, the African women’s entrepreneurial journey and so much more – all done between meetings, itinerary planning, jabs at the laptops keyboards, updating clients on ongoing tasks and commutes between the Botswana’s capital Gaborone and smaller town Kanye 100km away.

My message to you reading this today is – YOU CAN! You can do anything you dream of doing if you put aside reasons why you can’t or shouldn’t. I concluded my trip feeling a great sense of achievement for having granted myself the permission to embark on a new journey of faith and action into the New Year.

There comes a time when the years of planning and jotting down notes must morph into action, powered by faith. My mantra in this season has been “LORD, I am here,” followed closely by mapping out what needs to be done in as far as the next steps. The more time spent in research and thinking through your plan, the more refined the process becomes, giving you a clearer roadmap concerning what it will take to make the next action item and achievement.

It all came together – tickets, accommodation, the speakership, the soft launch for my new book “Reinvented: Challenging insecurity to live authentically through faith,” experiencing a taste of a new culture, establishing new contacts – all of it came together by sheer faith and willingness to see things happen.

Let this be you into the New Year; honing in your faith and channelling our energy to make your dreams come true one step at a time. You can! Whatever you’ve been meaning to do, go for it! GOD has an awesome way of stepping in and making things happen if you keep ploughing through! Celebrate the small victories as they culminate into the really big wins. When things don’t work out as you envisioned, don’t dwell on it too long. Keep moving, keep praying, and keep strategizing! The successes will come because you can!
