Be the game changer: The importance of personal reinvention

"Millennials make up more than a third of Africa's population. The impact they are having on politics and business across the continent is just beginning to be felt."

- Lidudumalingani Mqombothi, The Africa Report.

Personal reinvention isn’t easy, but it is essential. It’s also pretty hot and trendy these days! We are constantly reminded (read bombarded) with literature, movies, seminars and webinars reminding and encouraging us: “You need to reinvent yourself!”, “ “10 steps to personal reinvention”, “ How I transformed my life: The ultimate reinvention tool - kit”. Reinvention has always existed but just like the increase in awareness of the importance of self-love and self-care, reinventing ourselves has never been so critical to survival, relevance and sanity in an increasingly competitive and volatile environment .

This all sounds well and good, very progressive and intentional, but, what does it even mean?!?  Before I delve into the importance of personal reinvention for the the mighty African millenial, I think it is essential to define this “ next best thing”.

The Collins dictionary defines reinvention as “the act or an instance of replacing a product, etc with an entirely new version”. I am not and have never been afraid of death. What terrifies me the most is the thought of reaching that state without having exhausted every gift within in me and ultimately, God’s perfect plan and purpose in my life. I have always been aware of the fact that I am not like most people. By this I mean, God has equipped me with a personality, wit and light which draws people in from all walks of life. This realization, coupled with my acknowledgment that I was created to serve a purpose and calling greater than me, has influenced my very well calculated and timed risks in reinventing myself.

To me, personal reinvention cannot be separated from purpose, impact and legacy. What I am certain of is that with each experience and encounter, God is molding me to be the woman He ordained to play a critical role in her nation and amongst her people. Having been a model, writer, actress, poet, spoken word artist, corporate slayer, outstanding speaker, trailblazer and game changer, all of these roles and seasons have been stepping stones where I had to shift in mindset, personal perception and action. I’ll stop here for today… What does personal reinvention mean to you and is it really THAT important?
