Why you shouldn't always listen to the things people say

May 17, 2018

You have no responsibility to live up to what other people think you ought to accomplish. I have no responsibility to be like they expect me to be. It’s their mistake, not my failing.

– Richard P. Feynman

I vividly remember one uncle saying I was destined to fail at life. I was 16 years old, bracing for my O'level exams and studying hard during the weekends so I wouldn't have to wake up in the middle of the night to sit in the heap of laundry in the boarders' bathrooms at Chisipite Senior School. On this particular occasion, I had met him at a family gathering, where he proceeded to quiz me and two of my other cousins (also sitting for O'level) exams on some random science questions - possibly all he could remember from having studied for the same decades before. I got one answer wrong and in came the verbal onslaught.

His comment came unsolicited, almost as if he came armed with an attack. My feelings were hurt for a long time, and in moments of distress in my early 20s, I quiet literally thought these words were coming to life in a wierdly prophetic manner. 20 years later I remember where I was when he said those words BUT GOD!! I stay vindicated and stay basking in the knowledge of who I Am and whose I am - a daughter of the Most High GOD. Granted, it's taken me a good bit of time to get here, but what's key is that eventually - I did get there right?

What about you? Did someone ever say something to you that you still to this day wonder what the motivation was? That aunt, that ex, that boss, that teacher, those words? People often times project the things that have been said about them once upon a time, or the things they are struggling to shake off themselves. Even to this day, when I bump into this uncle, despite my many achievements over the years, it's almost as if it would kill him to say something nice to me. His loss really...

If you don't carry an ingrained consciousness of who you are, whose you are, and how much capacity you carry to hash out some pretty awesome things, you may catch yourself living your life based on the wrong opinions of others concerning you! I remember those words my uncle said to me more than 20 years ago, yet have used them as reminders of how much GOD has turned my story to one that negates this previous yet unfortunate attempt at the prophetic.

My encouragement for you today, is to bask in the glory of GOD's unending promises over your life. I openly speak about my belief in GOD because it is the very fabric of who I am today. My faith put me on a path towards personal reinvention, a process characterised by really taking some time to unpack all the mess including negative words spoken over my life. Over time, I've laid numerous negative narratives on the side of their heads, retelling my story by just giving all I put my hands on, a good burst of energy and commitment.

So chin up soldier! If you are reading this, understand that it's not what "they said" but what GOD says and what you believe that matters. Keep the faith beloved! You are going places; but in order to get there quicker, you may need to sift through a lot of the things people say about you. If it doesn't build you, destroy it. If the words don't inspire you, remind yourself that you are so much bigger than anything negative ever spoken about you.

Constantly on a quest for Reinvention
