Your beliefs: Empowering or destructive?

May 17, 2018

When I was a little girl, I used to hear a lot about some guy called Tony Robbins - how he hit rock bottom and one day he decided that was the last time he was ever going to be broke again. Fast forward to my adult years, and now I get to listen in to his videos and podcasts myself, because sometimes, we need to be reminded about the impact of channelling your thinking towards the positive. On beliefs Robbins cites:

"Beliefs have the power to create and the power to destroy. Human beings have the awesome ability to take any experience of their lives and create a meaning that disempowers them or one that can literally save their lives."

Too true. Radical change and new beginnings requires shifting mindsets and aligning your thinking to your doing. All that is anchored by what you believe about yourself or your situation. For a very long time I carried a grossly dismal outlook of myself, heavily fueled by the guilt that stemmed from not knowing how to rid myself of bad habits, bad relationships, excessive spending (which was my version of comfort food), poor self-esteem and so on. Nowadays I hear people say "I have issues" and I'm quick to retort - "No you don't!" - just so I can shift them from being in a mental state of entertaining negative thoughts about themselves.

Yes, not all days are smothered in milk chocolate or wrapped in rose petals. It's a fight to steer away from wallowing on the disappointments that come with someone saying something off the mark or refusing to cooperate, a negative doctor's report, financial burdens and so on. But we have a choice when it comes to what we believe. What separates all of humankind is belief-centered. We may struggle to carry a positive view about anything if it's not anchored in the correct beliefs, which in turn shape our values and the things we subsequently do as we navigate life.

So then, ask yourself today then: who do you believe you are? What do you believe you can achieve? Are your beliefs in correlation with what you are experiencing? Could it be that the difference between whether you win and whether you lose lies in the relationship between your beliefs, thoughts and actions?

Points to ponder on today's Reinvented Train!
