Growth: Bridging the gap between today and your aspirations

May 22, 2018

How do you measure growth in life? When you say to someone, "I've grown" - what does that mean to you?

Is growth a measure of boxes ticked, spiritual soundness, financial capacity, abundance of connections, certificates on your walls, or a combination of such things and a host of others? On the subject of growing in wealth, Proverbs 11:24 reads "There is one who scatters, and yet increases all the more, And there is one who withholds what is justly due, and yet it results only in want." In the same book but Chapter 1:5 the Bible cites when speaking on growing in wisdom and grace,"A wise man will hear and increase in learning. And a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel." There are countless definitions of how one ought to go about measuring growth, but the truth of the matter is that as humans, we generally view similar elements as we measure whether or not we are successful, or growing.

I shared an insightful conversation the other day with my husband, wherein I said in passing  how the speed at which time moves sometimes makes one feel like they haven't achieved much despite the toil. He proceeded in that moment to outline some of the things that were actually consistently and constantly going on behind the scenes; things that we as adults, tend to forget about in the busyness of life. Children are enrolled in school and are growing, dependents have completed their studies and are now self-sufficient, career progression, new revelations on the spiritual front, perhaps there are some investments made or plans to get on the property ladder and so on.

It's important that we are conscious of the myriad of blessings that come our way, taking moments of reflect on how far we have come. To me, growth is about bridging the gap between where we are today and where we want to be tomorrow. Growth is a quest for continued change for the better. How we define is it is completely subjective, as a college student may focus more on putting the necessary efforts to passing each module, while someone else who hasn't had the privilege of being a college student, may be working their first job and doing their best to move from an entry level position to a supervisory position. Whatever you are focused on at any one time ought to yield some measurable outcome. "I worked at ABC so I could attain XYZ"or "If I do this, the outcome will be that".

Now then, ask yourself how you define growth? Surely you and I wouldn't pursue half the goals on our list if growth and discovery of purpose weren't important to us. What we know is, no-one wants a stagnant existence. We all live for pursuit of positive change. We want to breakthrough the surface of situations and reach newer heights. However you define growth, ensure that there is a balance across all areas of your life. Find your method and work at it holistically. Whether you are looking for that promotion at work or trying to land that new contract, looking to relocate to a new city that offers you better prospects, working on losing weight or saving up for your first home - keep going. That is what growth is - bridging the gap between where you are today and where you aspire to be tomorrow! Keep your eye on your prize and with time, you will reach the finishing line!
