Of personal reinvention, finding and owning your truth

October 3, 2018

“Live your truth. Express your love. Share your enthusiasm. Take action towards your dreams. Walk your talk. Dance and sing to your music. Embrace your blessings. Make today worth remembering.” Steve Maraboli

Your truth is yours to own. It's important that you own your story. No-one can rewrite your story without your permission, nor can they edit your chapters' narratives unless you hand over your pen.

I meet countless people who when you get to talking to them, it's quite clear that their answers in conversation are scripted. Like a big pitch, they roll out their credentials almost as if it were a mask to hide layers upon layers of insecurity. After they are done, you are left staring at a hollow personality, carrying not a whole lot to give to the people around them beyond their list upon list of credits and accomplishments.

Perhaps that is what success means to them, or to us all really. But not knowing thyself will after a time, make you mechanical, scripted, like a robot, churning out what it's fed without any emotion. When you are yet to acknowledge your truth, which oftentimes comes with its own buckets of dirt, you feel a desperate desire to posture such that the flaws, shortcomings, struggles and toils remain hidden.

I was that person before, until I realised that the only person living with the internal warfare of not feeling what I was portraying myself to be - successful with life all the way figured out - was me. I had to look myself in the mirror everyday, convincing myself to feel "good" so I could get through the day yet I felt everything but that. I then grew tired of it and made a decision to bear the cost of unpacking my truth. It wasn't any easy journey but 12 years since making that decision, I am thankful that I listened to GOD and trusted Him to break me down so that He could put the pieces together. Today I smile because I truly am happy, and in my moments of solitude, I am confident of this - I am on a journey that is enjoyable because I confronted the things I didn't appreciate or love about my former self.

How many of us know though that before a seed can germinate, it must be covered by dirt. That dirt may shroud it in darkness but also feeds it nutrients, strengthening before the shoot breaks through the surface. Your story, my story, our story - will involve our being covered by dirt. But when we get past that and start reaching towards the sun, we with time become that tree people seek refuge under.

Your truth is yours to own. Don't despise it. Identify the strengths in each chapter of your story and use those to reach new heights. No more hiding, no more posturing. Just be. Live. Own your truth.

Eternally grateful,

Yvonne
